Press Release
Fentanyl Dealer Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison
For Immediate Release
U.S. Attorney's Office, Southern District of Alabama
According to court documents, James Walker Stewart, 38, was arrested on November 18, 2023, following a traffic stop in Atmore, Alabama. During that stop, agents found Stewart in possession of half a kilogram bulk fentanyl, a small amount of methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia. Stewart admitted that he and a coconspirator, Zachary Heaton Thaggard, had picked up the fentanyl in Atlanta, Georgia, and were transporting it to Pensacola, Florida.
Stewart further admitted that he had coordinated the fentanyl transaction with another coconspirator, Justin Brian Melton, who was incarcerated in an Alabama prison and brokered the deal using a contraband cell phone. Agents seized and searched Stewart’s cell phone, which contained text messages, pictures, videos, and other evidence of his drug-trafficking activities with Melton and other coconspirators.
In addition to the 120-month prison sentence, United States District Judge Kristi K. DuBose ordered Stewart to serve a 10-year term of supervised release upon his release from prison, during which time he will be subject to drug testing and treatment. The court did not impose a fine, but Judge DuBose ordered Stewart to pay $200 in special assessments. For their roles in the conspiracy, the court previously sentenced Melton and Thaggard to serve 210 months and 30 months in prison, respectively.
U.S. Attorney Sean P. Costello of the Southern District of Alabama made the announcement.
The Drug Enforcement Administration, the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency investigated the case.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin Roller prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States.
