Monroe County Woman Sentenced for Conspiracy and Providing Contraband to a Federal Prisoner

MOBILE, AL – A Vredenburgh, Alabama woman was sentenced today to 6 months on house arrest followed by 3 years on probation for conspiring to and providing contraband to a federal inmate. 

According to court documents, Beverly Castophney, 38, plead guilty to conspiring with a jail guard, Reginald Thames, and federal inmate, Vincent Lambert, to introduce contraband to the Monroe County jail. Castophney was in a romantic relationship with Lambert.  While Lambert was incarcerated, he and Castophney discussed leaving a package of contraband on Thames’ car in exchange for money.  On January 19, 2023, Castophney was observed placing a package on a vehicle in the parking lot. Thames walked out to his vehicle and was intercepted by deputies with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. The package contained contraband cell phones, chargers, cigarettes and Adderall pills.

Earlier this year, Vincent Lambert was sentenced to 12 months to serve for Conspiracy and Possessing Prison Contraband.  Reginald Thames was sentenced to 6 months to serve for Conspiracy and Providing Prison Contraband to a Federal Prisoner.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Tandice Blackwood prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States.
