Job Description of Student Volunteer

Student Volunteer – an internship at a U S Attorney’s Office offers a unique and challenging experience for the highly motivated student.  You will be part of a dedicated team helping to enforce federal criminal and civil laws that protect life, liberty and property of citizens.  The United States Attorney’s Office serves as the principal litigator for its judicial district and is responsible for coordinating multiple agency investigations within the district.  The United States Attorney has the responsibility and authority to prosecute violations of Federal criminal statutes, defend the government in civil actions, seek the enforcement of a variety of civil enforcement statutes, and institute proceedings for the collection of fines and penalties.  The Sothern District of Mississippi is seeking outstanding candidates for a student internship to assist in our mission.  There will be opportunities to watch our attorneys in the courtroom.  The incumbent will perform a variety of tasks in support of our Civil and Criminal Divisions.  Assignments include but are not limited to: 

  • Operating copy machines
  • Answering telephones and making recurring and special messenger trips as necessary
  • Sorting and arranging material for filing in alphabetical, numerical or chronological order
  • And, other duties as assigned.

 

Job Description of Law Student Volunteer

Law Student Volunteer – Law students perform research projects and assist in discovery, motion practice, and trial preparation.  To ensure that all interns finish the semester with a good writing sample, every intern will work under the guidance of Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) to prepare documents to be filed with the court.  Interns will be given assignments with as many difference attorney’s as possible, providing exposure to a wider variety of practice areas and professional contacts.  Our goal is to introduce our interns to the federal legal system, to develop their legal skills and to enjoy their experience.
