Moore Capito
Moore Capito is the United States Attorney for the Southern District of West Virginia. President Donald J. Trump nominated Capito on June 30, 2025, and he was confirmed by the United States Senate on October 7, 2025.
As United States Attorney, Capito is the chief federal law enforcement officer for the Southern District of West Virginia. Capito oversees a staff of 37 attorneys and 40 non-attorney personnel located in offices in Charleston, Huntington, and Beckley. The office is responsible for prosecuting federal crimes in the district, which covers 23 counties. The office also defends the United States in civil cases and collects debts owed to the United States.
Capito previously served in the West Virginia Legislature, where he was elected to four terms in the House of Delegates representing the 35th District in Kanawha County. As a legislator, Capito served as Chairman of the House Committee on the Judiciary and as a member of the Banking and Insurance Committee, the Technology and Infrastructure Committee, and on the Joint Committee on Natural Gas Development. Capito also served on the Legislature's Commission on Special Investigations and on the interim committees on Economic Development, Government and Finance, and Redistricting. Capito established and served as Co-Chair of the Legislature’s bipartisan Tech Caucus, which focuses on issues related to entrepreneurship and innovation, and served on the Intermediate Court of Appeals of West Virginia Advisory Council and as the Co-Chair of the joint West Virginia Law Institute Committee.
Capito has substantial experience in corporate and energy law, including all phases of complex corporate, commercial, and real estate transactions. Prior to taking office, Capito practiced law with the Babst Calland law firm. Capito represented publicly traded and privately held clients in corporate mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures as well as business structuring, governance, commercial contracts, and real estate transactions. Capito also advised and counseled companies in navigating the complex legal landscape of emerging technologies, including data center development.
Capito was raised in Charleston, West Virginia, where he graduated from George Washington High School. Capito earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree at Duke University and his law degree from Washington and Lee University.
