U.S. Attorney’s Office Collects $9.7 Million in Civil, Criminal Actions in Fiscal Year 2024

For Immediate Release
U.S. Attorney's Office, Western District of Missouri

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – U.S. Attorney Teresa Moore announced today that the Western District of Missouri collected more than $9.7 million in criminal and civil actions in Fiscal Year 2024. Of this amount, $8,750,662 was collected in criminal actions and $962,920 was collected in civil actions.

Additionally, the Western District of Missouri worked with other U.S. Attorney’s Offices and components of the Department of Justice to collect an additional $7,639,046 in cases pursued jointly by these offices. Of this amount, $41,074 was collected in criminal actions and $7,597,971 was collected in civil actions.

“The attorneys and support staff in our Monetary Penalties Unit are committed to ensuring that crime doesn’t pay,” Moore said. “Nearly twice as many dollars were collected in 2024 from criminal actions than in the prior year, representing the profits criminals were forced to hand over when they were convicted of their crimes.

“Victims of crime deserve their court-ordered restitution, and the public deserves those who owe a debt to the government to be held accountable for paying what they owe. These figures reflect our ongoing commitment and successful accomplishment of those goals.”

The U.S. Attorneys’ Offices, along with the department’s litigating divisions, are responsible for enforcing and collecting civil and criminal debts owed to the U.S. and criminal debts owed to federal crime victims. The law requires defendants to pay restitution to victims of certain federal crimes who have suffered a physical injury or financial loss. While restitution is paid to the victim, criminal fines and felony assessments are paid to the department’s Crime Victims Fund, which distributes the funds collected to federal and state victim compensation and victim assistance programs.

Additionally, the U.S. Attorney’s office in the Western District of Missouri, working with partner agencies and divisions, collected $6,914,466 in asset forfeiture actions in FY 2024. Forfeited assets deposited into the Department of Justice Assets Forfeiture Fund are used to restore funds to crime victims and for a variety of law enforcement purposes.
