Armenia: ICITAP-Trained Patrol Police Begin Service in Two New Regions
On April 16, the Government of Armenia officially marked the start of service for the Patrol Police in the northern regions of Lori and Shirak. The ceremonies marking the launch were presided over by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, who initiated the deployment of nearly 500 newly-trained Patrol Police officers. The creation of these two regional Patrol Police structures was made possible by collaboration between the Government of Armenia, the U.S, Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), and ICITAP. Vehicles and facility renovation were funded by the GOA while uniforms, electronic equipment, and duty equipment were provided by INL. ICITAP successfully delivered five months of Patrol Police Academy training for the officers including direct training by international law enforcement experts on tactics and officer safety. The launch events were attended by the U.S. Ambassador, the EU Ambassador, and diplomatic representatives from over 10 countries. INL and ICITAP staff also attended and were singled out by the Prime Minister for their crucial efforts in supporting the successful training and equipping of the officers in preparation for active service. Following the Prime Minister’s address and remarks by the Chief of the National Police of the Republic of Armenia at Gyumri and Vanadzor, the newly-minted officers immediately set out on their first patrols in service to Armenian citizens.
