Serbia: ICITAP Partners with FBI to Deliver Cryptocurrency and Dark Web Investigations Training

On October 22, ICITAP-Serbia completed a five-day Cryptocurrency and Dark Web Investigations Training at the Police University in Belgrade. The objective of this training was to familiarize Serbian police officers investigating corruption and financial/economic crime cases as well as cybercrime cases with concepts and terminology pertaining to virtual currency and its increasing global importance, as it is more and more frequently used by criminals in performing their illegal activities and hiding the proceeds of their crime. The course was delivered by FBI instructors and included classroom presentations, practical exercises, case studies, and discussions. Some of the topics covered include: introduction of main concepts and the anatomy of cryptocurrency transaction; how to “follow the money” and perform virtual currency transaction tracking; how is virtual money laundering performed; available tools to conduct an investigation and how to use them to collect evidence of criminal activity. The training also covered the use of cryptocurrencies on the dark web where they are popular to use because they provide a complete anonymity in regard to identity and transaction details. Topics discussed in this context include the dark web tools available on the Internet, how to access them and find evidence of criminal activity and available methods, which can be implemented to identify anonymous online users.
