Mexico: ICITAP Facilitates Third International Forensic Science Symposium
On August 14, with the support of Principal Deputy Attorney Assistant General John P. Cronan, ICITAP concluded the delivery of the Third Annual International Forensic Science Symposium in Mexico City. PDAAG Cronan delivered closing remarks for the three-day symposium, emphasizing the critical partnership between the U.S. and Mexico as well as the great strides made in forensic science to advance the rule of law not only in Mexico but throughout the region. Through the support of and coordination with the State Department’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (State/INL), within the framework of the Merida Initiative, ICITAP facilitated the attendance of nearly 400 forensic personnel from across Mexico and throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. The topics included improving reliability and court acceptance of forensic evidence through international accreditation, the use of forensic databases, and the importance of communication and coordination with investigative counterparts. Invited speakers included Mexican federal representatives, state attorneys general, and forensic leaders as well as forensic scientists from federal and local laboratories in the United States.
