Colombia: ICITAP Supports First International Symposium of Criminal Investigations of Gender-Based Violence in Medellin

From December 1 to 2, ICITAP supported the Colombian National Police (CNP) organize the First International Symposium of criminal investigations of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) held in Medellin. The symposium incorporated a conference style panel and working groups from different approaches, profiles and professional roles of investigators, criminal analysts, doctors, experts, psychologists, judges, and prosecutors among others, to encourage debate, facilitate the exchange experiences and good practices, induce alliances, inter-institutional articulation and deepen concepts, methodologies, around the motivation to overcome gaps in criminal investigations of GBV.  Keynote speakers included a Supervisory Special Agent and a violent crimes analysis from the FBI Investigative and Operational Support Section, National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime, Behavioral Analysis Unit. The CNP Director General, ICITAP Principal Deputy Director for Global Operations, ICITAP Assistant Director for the Western Hemisphere, and representatives from various Colombian institutions were in attendance.  ICITAP works with the support of and in coordination with the State Department’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL).

On September 29, ICITAP facilitated a webinar titled “Community-Focused Policing to Combat Terrorism and Counter Violent Extremism,” which brought together the Chief of the Seattle Police Department , the Chief of the Ann Arbor Police Department , and a Lt. of Police from the Denver PD to discuss their departments’ community engagement and violence prevention programs as well as their perspective on ICITAP’s 2020 publication titled “ Using Community-Focused Policing to Combat Terrorism and Counter Violent Extremism: A Law Enforcement Toolkit .” The three-person panel was moderated by officials from the State Department’s Bureau of Counterterrorism Office of Programs (CT/P), DOJ’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) and from ICITAP. Croatia: ICITAP Advances Women in Policing Through Groundbreaking EMPoWER Program

From March 13 to 18, ICITAP’s Engaging Multinational Police Women on Equality and Rights (EMPoWER) program, with support from the ICITAP-Croatia team, held its first regional symposium with 24 participants from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Kenya in Opatija, Croatia. ICITAP recognizes the need to increase the participation of women in counterterrorism law enforcement by educating leaders, creating opportunities for networking, and connecting with professional colleagues.
