Brian D. Skaret
Brian D. Skaret began serving as Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Criminal Division of the United States Department of Justice in May 2026. In this capacity, Brian oversees the Department of Justice’s Office of International Affairs (OIA), the Office of Overseas Prosecutorial Development, Assistance and Training (OPDAT), and the International Criminal Investigative Training Assistance Program (ICITAP). In this role, he supervises matters involving extradition, mutual legal assistance, and international law enforcement cooperation with partner nations, and supports the Department’s attachés, resident legal advisors, and specialized law enforcement advisors assigned to U.S. embassies worldwide.
Prior to this appointment, Brian served overseas for 12 years as the Resident Legal Advisor at the U.S. Embassy in Asuncion, Paraguay, and as a Judicial Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Bogotá, Colombia. In those roles, he advised senior U.S. and minister-level foreign officials on combatting terrorist financing, transnational organized crime, illicit finance, extradition, and complex cross-border criminal investigations in support of U.S. law enforcement objectives in Latin America. He also advised U.S. investigative and prosecutorial teams on overseas investigations and undercover operations targeting narcotics trafficking, organized crime, and corruption. During his tenure in Colombia, more than 600 fugitives were extradited to the United States.
Earlier in his career, Brian served for more than a decade as a prosecutor in the Criminal Division’s Human Rights and Special Prosecutions Section, where he investigated and prosecuted international violent crime, transnational organized crime, and complex criminal immigration offenses in federal districts across the United States. He also served as an instructor at the National Advocacy Center, FBI Academy, and Federal Law Enforcement Training Center.
Before joining the Department in 2003, Brian clerked for Honorable U.S. District Court Judge Suzanne B. Conlon in Chicago, Illinois. He received his law degree from the Notre Dame Law School and majored in Economics and Music at Knox College. He is a member of the state bars of New York, Florida, Colorado, the District of Columbia, and the United States Supreme Court.
