United States v Mobile County (S.D. Ala.)

Overview

On March 10, 2021, the United States filed a complaint in United States v. Mobile County Sheriff (S.D. Ala.). The complaint alleged that the Sheriff violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII) by failing to take prompt and effective remedial action to stop inmates at the Mobile County Metro Jail (Jail) from sexually harassing female correctional officers who work at the Jail by exposing themselves, masturbating at them, and making comments of a sexual nature, and this harassment continued after they complained to Jail supervisors about the harassment. On September 19, 2023, the Court entered a settlement agreement resolving the case, which required the Sheriff to pay $2.02 million in monetary relief to affected women and make changes to the Jail including developing new policies on inmate sexual misconduct; conducting training for all inmates and employees on the new policies regarding sexual misconduct; and implementing remedial measures, such as a dedicated housing area and a dedicated sexual misconduct coordinator.
