PRE-INTERVIEW SUBMISSIONS
EOIR hiring offices that review pre-interview submissions may ask for a writing sample, a current résumé, or both. Please see the individual office requirements and note submission deadlines below. EOIR reserves the right to terminate further consideration of candidates who fail to provide requested submissions by the specified deadline.
EOIR uses a centralized mailbox to receive pre-interview submissions. Candidates selected by multiple EOIR hiring offices should not send in multiple submissions. They should, however, meet the earliest submission deadline identified by any of the hiring offices that selected them for an interview. Ensure that you take appropriate precautions to protect the privacy of individuals who may be identified in your writing sample (e.g., redact all personally identifiable information prior to submission).
BIA: Requests a writing sample and current résumé not later than 10 days after notification of selection for interview.
OCAHO: Requests a writing sample not to exceed 15 pages and current résumé not later than 10 days after notification of selection for interview.
Office of General Counsel: No pre-interview submissions.
Office of Policy: Requests a writing sample and current résumé not later than 10 days after notification of selection for interview.
Office of the Chief Immigration Judge: Requests a writing sample and current résumé as soon as possible but not later than 7 days after notification of selection for interview.
Submission Deadline: Varies by selecting office - applicants interviewing with more than one must meet the earliest deadline.
Format: Microsoft Word or Adobe (PDF)
Type of Writing Sample: Interview candidates should submit one writing sample only, not to exceed 10 pages. The sample should be an original piece that has not been extensively edited by a third party (e.g., not a heavily-edited law review article or a judicial opinion). An excerpt of a longer piece is acceptable. A brief summary to orient the reader is acceptable and does not count against the page limit. Ensure that you take appropriate precautions to protect the privacy of individuals who may be identified in your writing sample (e.g., redact all personally identifiable information prior to submission).
Submission Method:
Submit by e-mail to: sam-2024.eoir@usdoj.gov
All submissions should include a standard subject line formatted as: NAME OF PROGRAM - Pre-Interview Submissions - YOUR NAME
