Meet the U.S. Attorney

Channing D. Phillips was named Acting United States Attorney on March 3, 2021.  He previously served in the same role between 2009 and 2010 and 2015 and 2017.
 
     Mr. Phillips first joined the United States Attorney’s Office in 1994 as a line Assistant United States Attorney, where he investigated and prosecuted a variety of criminal matters, including drug trafficking, illegal firearms, violent crime, immigration and fraud cases.  During the course of his career with the United States Attorney’s Office, Mr. Phillips has served in a number of managerial positions, including Principal Assistant United States Attorney, Chief of Staff and Special Counsel.
 
     Mr. Phillips began his career with the Department of Justice in 1990 as a trial attorney with the Organized Crime & Racketeering Section of the Criminal Division after having served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Shellie F. Bowers, Associate Judge of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.
 
     Prior to his nomination and appointment as United States Attorney in 2015, Mr. Phillips served as Senior Counselor to the Attorney General and Deputy Associate Attorney General for Diversity Management.
 
     Mr. Phillips, a native and resident of Washington, D.C., received his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia and his Juris Doctor from the Howard University School of Law.
