MDFL Civil Rights Unit Presents On DOJ’s Servicemembers And Veterans Initiative
The USAO-MDFL Civil Rights Unit, in partnership with the U.S. Navy’s Region Legal Service Office Southeast, recently presented to U.S. servicemembers during the Navy Office’s Southeast Symposium at the Naval Station Mayport in Jacksonville, Florida.
The symposium provided Navy Legal Service practitioners and servicemembers with information about, among other things, the Department of Justice’s Servicemembers and Veterans Initiative. This Initiative coordinates efforts with various DOJ components and federal agencies to build a comprehensive legal support and protection network focused on serving servicemembers, veterans, and their families. Symposium participants were provided an overview of the federal laws protecting servicemembers’ civil rights, which include employment rights under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act of 1994 (“USERRA”) and financial rights under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (“SCRA”).
The presentation also afforded participants an opportunity to examine the myriad of resources and protections available to servicemembers both during and after their military service to our country.
