Orange County Reentry Simulation
The USAO-MDFL partnered with Orange County Corrections and other community partners to present a full-scale Reentry Simulation. The simulation exercise was intended to provide a realistic glimpse of the challenges faced by individuals returning home from incarceration. In addition, exposure to these issues permitted participants an opportunity to explore innovative ideas and solutions that may remove barriers to successful reentry.
The event, held at Orange County Corrections (Orlando, Florida), included 58 Orange County Community Corrections staff members and 17 additional volunteers. Volunteers assisted with registration, maintained the various simulation positions, and managed the flow of individuals as they progressed through the various event stations. Deputy Chief Anthony Watts and Administrative Supervisor of Inmate Programs Marie Eady welcomed participants and volunteers to the facility, USAO Community Outreach Specialist Khalilah Escalera provided an overview of the event and instructed participants on how to navigate the simulation exercise. Unit Supervisor of Inmate and Transitional Services Jammy Hill moderated the event by providing active feedback on each phase for corrections staff.
The event culminated with a lived reentry experience, shared by Marquis McKenzie with the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition. Mr. McKenzie shared his real life experience as a previously incarcerated person who now works to help others successfully transition back into the community post-incarceration.
Special thanks to our community partners for making the Reentry Simulation a successful event: Osceola County Corrections, Seminole County Corrections, Orange County Government (4C programs), Moms Demand Action, Inside Out Jail Ministries, Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, and Paving The Way Foundation.
