Somalia: ICITAP Police Information Unit Mentors Leverage Technology to Improve Communication During COVID-19 Restrictions

On May 10, in an effort to improve information management and instill a disciplined approach to the development of police information, ICITAP introduced a new spreadsheet within Google Drive that captures ongoing tasks for the Somali Police Force Police Information Unit (PIU) analysts. This spreadsheet enables the PIU analysts to capture and record tasks in a central location while also allowing the mentor and PIU Director to provide oversight despite separation due to travel restrictions. This is a customized product designed to meet the needs of all parties and help the Somalis to take responsibility for organizing, prioritizing, and monitoring progress. With the full support of the PIU Director, this spreadsheet was coupled with the addition of regularly scheduled video conferences designed to promote proper attendance and allow for clear dialogue between mentor and mentees. The video conference platform has also been used to demonstrate methodology and it is anticipated that this will help boost team motivation as it also shows evidence of completed tasks. In Somalia, ICITAP works with the support of and in coordination with the State Department’s Bureau of Counterterrorism.
