Law Enforcement Coordination and Training – BLM

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Han and Fontanez participated in the BLM’s in-service officer training at the Bureau’s Santa Fe office.  Their presentation included changes in the law, including the implications of the recent U.S. Supreme Court cases Riley v. California (holding that police generally may not, without a warrant, search digital information on a seized cell phone) and Rodriguez v. United States (holding that absent reasonable suspicion, police extensions of a traffic stop may violate constitutional protections against unreasonable seizures).  They also provided a refresher on general Fourth Amendment issues – e.g., differences between consensual encounters, detentions, and arrests – and responded to questions previously submitted by officers.
