The Department of Justice's Investigation of Allegations Regarding the Assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. -- June 2000

Date

On August 26, 1998, the Attorney General directed the Civil Rights Division to investigate two separate allegations related to the April 4, 1968 assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The allegations emanated from Loyd Jowers, a former Memphis tavern owner, and Donald Wilson, a former agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The Division concluded that neither allegation was credible and found nothing to disturb the 1969 judicial determination that James Earl Ray murdered Dr. King.
