U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Columbia
WASHINGTON -- Rashim Johnson, 35, a previously convicted felon residing in Warsaw, Virginia, was sentenced today in U.S. District Court in Washington D.C. to 84 months in federal prison in connection with his illegal possession of a fully loaded Glock 19 handgun and a large quantity of methamphetamine while he was on supervised release for two serious felonies, announced U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro.
Johnson pleaded guilty May 18, 2026, before Judge Amit P. Mehta to unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. In addition to the 84-month prison sentence, Judge Mehta ordered Johnson to serve three years of supervised release. Federal prosecutors had requested a 110-month prison term.
According to court papers, on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2025, about 12:13 a.m., Metro Transit Police Department units assigned to the United States Park Police Task Force were on patrol in an unmarked patrol cruiser near the 4800 Block of Sherrif Road NE.
Officers observed 10 to 15 people loitering in the middle of the street. The officers stopped and exited their vehicles wearing marked police uniforms. Johnson spotted the approaching officers and immediately fled in the opposite direction. An officer gave chase. As Johnson ran, the officer watched Johnson remove a black object from his waistband and toss it over a chain-link fence.
Johnson continued running across Kane Place NE. The officer drew his firearm and ordered the Johnson to the ground. Johnson surrendered. Only ten seconds elapsed between when the officer observed Johnson toss the gun and Johnson’s surrender. Police recovered the firearm, a nine-millimeter Glock 19 handgun with an obliterated serial number. The weapon was equipped with an extended magazine loaded with 31 rounds with one round in the chamber. It was also equipped with a flashlight mounted below the barrel.
Once Johnson was placed in handcuffs, police recovered 53.5 methamphetamine pills from his right pants pocket.
Johnson was prohibited from possessing any firearm due to his previous convictions for felony firearm possession, possession with intent to distribute PCP and LSD, and for second degree assault, all out of Prince George’s County, Maryland. Johnson also has additional convictions in Maryland for armed robbery, robbery with a deadly weapon, and use of a handgun in a crime of violence.
This case was investigated by Metro Transit Police Department units assigned to the United States Park Police Task Force.
The matter was prosecuted under the Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful initiative by Assistant U.S. Attorney Samuel M. Deau and Travis Wolf.
Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful supports President Trump’s Executive Order that cracks down on gun violence, prioritizes federal firearms violations, pursues tougher penalties, and seeks detention for federal firearms violators.
Following a brief foot chase, police recovered Johnson’s firearm, a nine-millimeter Glock 19 handgun with an obliterated serial number.
