Law Student Voluntary Internships

Law Student Voluntary Internships

An internship with the U.S. Attorney's Office offers a unique and challenging experience for the highly motivated law student. Working with Assistant U.S. Attorneys (AUSAs) and other staff, you will be part of a dedicated team helping to enforce Federal criminal and civil laws that protect life, liberty, and property of citizens.

Assignments for volunteer law student interns often involve legal research and writing. Assignments are distributed based on an intern’s interests and the needs of the office. We seek to expose each intern to a variety of substantive matters and stages of criminal and civil litigation.

During an academic semester internship, students must be prepared to work from twelve to sixteen hours each week. In the summer, students are generally expected to work 40 hours each week.

Program Requirements. The U.S. Attorney’s Office accepts applications for law student voluntary internships from second- and third-year law students. Applicants must be United States citizens and can apply by submitting a cover letter and resume to the address below on or before the deadlines listed below.

Please note that every internship is contingent upon the satisfactory completion of a security clearance. Under no circumstances will a student be allowed to work in any capacity before his or her security clearance is successfully completed.

Academic Credit. Students may earn academic credit for working at our Office. Information on academic credit programs can be obtained from your law school’s placement office.
