About The District

The Northern District of New York serves 3.4 million people in a territory larger than the combined areas of the states of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. The U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of New York serves the district through its four staffed offices.

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York is a medium-sized governmental office, covering 32 counties in Upstate New York. The United States Attorney is Carla B. Freedman. The office has four staffed locations, in Syracuse (24 attorneys), Albany (24 attorneys), Binghamton (1 attorney), and Plattsburgh (5 attorneys).

The office has Criminal, Civil, and Appellate Divisions. The Criminal Division is responsible for the prosecution of federal crimes in areas including drugs, firearms, environmental crimes, child pornography, gang violence, smuggling, organized crime, white collar crime, and terrorism. The Civil Division represents federal agencies and employees in tort claims, constitutional torts, medical malpractice, bankruptcy, and general civil litigation; and maintains civil prosecutions under the False Claims Act. The Appellate Division is responsible for the prosecution of both criminal and civil appeals.
