Zuni Man Pleads Guilty to Assault

ALBUQUERQUE – A Zuni man pleaded guilty to assaulting and seriously injuring a woman in 2024. 

According to court documents, on June 11, 2024, Karl Devain Escobar, 33, an enrolled member of the Zuni Pueblo, assaulted Jane Doe at a residence in Zuni, New Mexico, by repeatedly hitting her on the back of the head, causing her to pass out. The assault resulted in serious bodily injury to Jane Doe which required medical treatment.

Escobar pleaded guilty to assault resulting in serious bodily injury. At sentencing Escobar faces up to 10 years in prison.

First Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Special Agent in Charge Justin A. Garris of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office made the announcement today.

The Gallup Resident Agency of the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office investigated this case with assistance from the Zuni Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Amy Mondragon is prosecuting the case.
