Assistant U.S. Attorneys

The selection process for Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) is rigorous and based strictly on merit. As federal prosecutors, you will be entrusted with the vital responsibility of representing the United States in court and making pivotal decisions that impact individuals, communities, and the public at large.

Candidates will be assessed on several key factors, including:

  • Experience and legal knowledge
  • Academic excellence
  • Professional character and integrity
  • Strong commitment to public service
  • Courtroom presence and effective communication skills
  • Ability to engage with and relate to a diverse range of people

Due to the complexity of our work, we typically require successful applicants to have a minimum of two to three years of legal experience following law school. This experience may involve:

  • Judicial clerkships (state or federal)
  • Roles in local, state, or federal prosecutors’ offices
  • Positions within other federal or state agencies
  • Experience in private practice
  • Engagement in public interest or non-profit legal work

Eligibility and Background Requirements

All employment is contingent upon successfully passing a Department of Justice background investigation. This comprehensive process may include:
