Opportunities for Attorneys

Our legal hiring is open to both new, entry-level attorneys and experienced attorneys.

New attorneys are hired through Justice’s competitive, centralized recruitment program—the Attorney General’s Honors Program—which is open to graduating law students and recent law school graduates who entered judicial clerkships, graduate law programs, or qualifying legal fellowships within 9 months of law school graduation and who meet additional eligibility programs.  The USTP also offers opportunities for experienced attorneys looking to work on significant and complex issues in bankruptcy. The USTP has many opportunities for non-attorney professionals, including auditors, paralegals, legal clerks, and administrative support personnel such as information technology specialists, budget analysts, and procurement specialists. Volunteer Legal Internships

Legal internships are an excellent opportunity for law students with a background and interest in bankruptcy, policy making, administrative law, and legislative matters to gain experience and possibly to earn course credit.

Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program

The USTP utilizes OPM’s highly competitive PMF Program to identify graduate students to fill positions at the GS-9 through GS-11 level. Fellows embark on a two-year assignment with the USTP, which includes extensive training and a four-to-six-month developmental detail, with the option of converting to a permanent position upon completion of the program.

Private Trustee Appointments

The USTP appoints and supervises private trustees who administer bankruptcy estates under chapters 7, 12, and 13 of the Bankruptcy Code. In addition, under the Small Business Reorganization Act of 2019, the USTP maintains pools of private trustees who are appointed on a case-by-case basis as chapter 11 subchapter V trustees charged with facilitating the development of a consensual plan of reorganization by qualifying small business debtors and, in cases where the debtor is removed as the debtor-in-possession, with operating the debtor’s business and performing case administration duties. Private trustees are not government employees; however, they do work in concert with the USTP to ensure the efficiency and integrity of the bankruptcy system.
