Criminal Resource Manual

1362. Voluntary Theft Prevention Standard

Besides the mandatory component identification standard for certain passenger motor vehicles, the Secretary of Transportation is authorized to promulgate a voluntary component identification standard for the manufacturers and owners of a motor vehicle not subject to the mandatory standard. Compliance with the voluntary standard affords the components coverage under the criminal provisions of 18 U.S.C. § 511. To date, however, NHTSA has not promulgated a voluntary standard.
