On December 4, 2018, a federal grand jury returned an indictment against Dr. Rajendra Bothra, Dr. Eric Backos, Dr. Ganiu Edu, Dr. David Lewis, Dr. Christopher Russo and Dr. Ronald Kufner.  The indictment relates to the defendants’ operation of The Pain Center USA, PLLC d/b/a “The Pain Center” and Interventional Pain Center, PLLC d/b/a “Interventional Pain Center.”  Each defendant is charged with health care fraud conspiracy, aiding and abetting health care fraud, conspiracy to distribute controlled substances and unlawful distribution of controlled substances.

As part of the bond conditions for the defendants released pending trial, the Court ordered that each doctor is prohibited from prescribing controlled substances or billing federal health care programs.  This may have an effect on their ability to continue medical care for current patients of the practice.  Consequently, the United States Attorney’s Office recommends that any current patient contact their primary care physician for any further medical care that may be needed.

The United States Attorney’s Office does not take any position on civil litigation involving patients or former patients of the Pain Center USA or Interventional Pain Center.  We are unable to provide any legal advice or recommend counsel regarding civil lawsuits.

If you wish to present any information to our office regarding this case, please email usamie.victimservices@usdoj.gov or contact the FBI at 313-965-2323.
