RAPID CITY - United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell announced today that U.S. Magistrate Judge Daneta Wollmann sentenced a Kyle, South Dakota, man convicted of Assault by Beating, Striking, or Wounding. The sentencing took place on February 28, 2025.
Patrick Garrett, age 30, was sentenced to one year in federal prison, followed by one year of supervised release, and ordered to pay a $25 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Garrett was indicted for the charge by a federal grand jury in September 2024. He pleaded guilty on December 13, 2024.
On April 9, 2024, Garrett was with his girlfriend, and their two young children. An argument took place inside a car between Garrett and his girlfriend. Once the car stopped, his girlfriend exited the vehicle and attempted to remove their children from the car. Garrett did not want her and their children to leave. Garrett exited the vehicle, restrained her, pushed her to the ground, and got on top of her. Garrett then forced her into the backseat of the car. She attempted to call 911 and Garrett took the phone and threw it out of the window of the car. During the drive, Garrett struck her on the legs with his fist and yelled at her. When the vehicle stopped again, the girlfriend was able to run for help and was transported to the hospital for bodily injuries from the assault. An individual in the area of the altercation called 911 and reported to dispatch that she observed a woman shouting for help from the rear of the vehicle.
This case was investigated by the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Megan Poppen prosecuted the case.
Garrett was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
