Indian Country
The United States Attorney’s Office (USAO) for the Western District of New York (WDNY) prioritizes public safety in Indian Country. The Western District of New York is home to four separate federally recognized tribal nations:
- the Seneca Nation of Indians
- the Tonawanda Band of Senecas
- the Tuscarora Nation
- the Cayuga Indian Nation (located in both the Western and Northern Districts of New York)
The USAO-WDNY has a proud history of actively engaging in government-to-government relationship building with the four federally recognized tribal nations in the Western District of New York. Routine and meaningful government-to-government consultations with tribes and tribal organizations serve as a critical focus of this district’s public safety efforts. Active, frequent, and concerted efforts to address crimes in Indian Country are pursued in coordination with our tribal, federal, state, and local law enforcement partners. To support the district’s commitment to meaningful engagement and consultation, the United States Attorney has designated one Assistant United States Attorney to serve as the Tribal Liaison and point of contact for each tribal nation in the district. The United States Attorney is committed to continued consultations with tribal nations to create and institute individually tailored programs for each unique tribal nation that we proudly serve.
