Thomas F. Walton

Thomas F. (Tom) Walton is Director, Economic Policy Analysis, General Motors Corporation. In that position he oversees the analysis of the effectiveness and costs of current and prospective governmental policies and regulations together with their implications for General Motors, for its customers, employees and stockholders, and for the general public. The analysis relates to a wide range of issues, including, energy, environmental, health and safety, health care, antitrust, fiscal, tax, labor, and trade and industrial policies.

Mr. Walton obtained a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Missouri at Columbia in 1967 and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1971. He was Assistant Professor at New York University before joining General Motors in 1973. In March of 1982 he left General Motors to serve as Special Advisor for Regulatory Affairs, Federal Trade Commission. He rejoined General Motors in August of 1984. He is the author of several publications regarding environmental, health and safety, antitrust, international trade, industrial competitiveness, and other policy issues. He is a member of the board of The Heartland Institute. He is a member of the American Economic Association and the Detroit Association of Business Economists. He is Vice Chair of The Business Research Advisory Council to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics in Washington D.C.
