A Family of Companies...

Smithfield Foods is known through the activities of its operating subsidiaries. Each meat processing company is responsible for aggressively pursuing opportunities for its own products and brands. Each hog production company is responsible for its own performance in coordination with the raw material needs of the processing companies. Wherever possible, the companies share information and opportunities resulting in strong new products, better breeding practices and better-served customers.

Smithfield Foods is the largest pork processor in the world, with fiscal 2002 production of 5.1 billion pounds of high-quality fresh pork and processed meats. We supply foodservice customers and retailers and own some of the most popular retail and foodservice pork brands in the world.

Beginning in 1998. Smithfield Foods expanded beyond US. borders with acquisitions in Canada, France and Poland. In August 1999, the Company further developed its international operations through a 50%-owned integrated pork joint venture in Mexico. These acquisitions give the Company strong market positions, high-quality manufacturing facilities and excellent growth potential in regions that have high pork consumption levels.

Smithfield Foods is the largest hog producer in the world and the world's largest producer of exceptionally lean hogs. Our commitment to vertical integration ensures a steady supply of superior raw materials and helps to tame industry cyclicality. We own and operate hog farms with about 700,000 sows in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Utah, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Missouri, Illinois, Mexico, Brazil and Poland.
