History of the Division's Paralegal Unit

On November 16, 1993, twelve paralegal specialists were hired by the Antitrust Division as part of its newly created Paralegal Unit. Presently, the Antitrust Division has over 175 paralegals.

The Antitrust Division’s paralegal program is considered to be one of the most reputable paralegal programs in the United States.

Responsibilities of a Paralegal

The Division offers its paralegals significant responsibility and hands-on experience in major investigations and litigation. Each paralegal is assigned to a particular section and works closely with the attorneys in preparing their cases. A list of the sections can be found on the Sections and Offices page.

A paralegal’s day-to-day work includes:

  • Document review and organization
  • Interviewing
  • Legal and factual research
  • Preparation of briefs and memoranda
  • Trial preparation

New paralegals are able to immediately take on significant responsibility due to the Division’s excellent training opportunities, as well as the support of colleagues. Experience in antitrust is not required.

Travel and overtime may be required.


The Antitrust Division hires recent college graduates, as well as qualified individuals with relevant academic and work experience. All paralegals should possess strong analytical, writing, research, and communication skills. Paralegals should also be able to work collaboratively on large teams.

This position requires:

  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills, both orally and in writing
  • Demonstrated initiative (must be a self-starter)
  • Ability to work under pressure effectively

You must be a U.S. Citizen to qualify for this position. A background investigation and drug test will be conducted.

Qualified applicants will be hired for a 14-month term appointment at the GS-07 level with the possibility of an extension.

How to Apply

A new class of Paralegal Specialists for all Division office locations is hired once a year, with the vacancy announcement typically being posted in February. The Antitrust Division has offices in Chicago, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C., and applicants have the option of applying to any of our locations.
