Counter-Proliferation Working Group (CPWP)

In 2007, the Justice Department and several partner agencies launched the national Counter-Proliferation Initiative. The purpose is to harness the counter-proliferation assets of U.S. law enforcement, licensing, and intelligence agencies to combat the growing national security threat posed by illegal exports of restricted U.S. military and dual-use technology to foreign nations and terrorist organizations.

Also, in 2007, the District of Massachusetts convened the Counter-proliferation Working Group to target efforts and effectively utilize resources. The CPWG shares information regarding current threats and suspicious activities regarding the transfer of sensitive U.S. technology through illegal means and coordinates investigations. Members of the CPWG include: the U.S. Attorney’s Office; the Department of Commerce’s Office of Export Enforcement; the Federal Bureau of Investigation; the Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations; Defense Criminal Investigative Service; Naval Criminal Investigative Service; Air Force Office of Special Investigations; and Defense Security Service.

An AUSA is the Chair of the Counter-Proliferation Working Group for the District of Massachusetts.
