Bangor, Maine:  United States Attorney Thomas E. Delahanty II announced that Lawrence A. Stewart, 48, of Wayne, Maine, pled guilty yesterday in U.S. District Court to theft of public money.

According to court records, from about October 2011 until January 2015, Stewart received additional Veterans Administration (“VA”) disability compensation based on unemployability when he was, in fact, gainfully employed.  Stewart provided falsified documentation to the VA, underreporting the extent of his employment and the income he had received.  In all, Stewart received overpayments of over $53,000 to which he was not entitled.

Stewart faces up to 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release.  He will be sentenced after the completion of a presentence investigation report by the U.S. Probation Office.

The investigation was conducted by the VA Office of the Inspector General.
