The Office of the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California seeks well-qualified law students to come work in our Civil and Criminal Divisions as law clerks. This is a voluntary program. However, arrangements can be made through the law schools to obtain course credit, and with some schools, public interest stipends.
This office has had numerous law clerks who have gone on to successful careers in the private and public arena. The law clerks work closely with the Assistant United States Attorneys in a number of litigation areas and on a variety of topics. Among other things, law clerks will be involved with writing and responding to motions, researching and writing appellate briefs, reviewing evidence, and assisting with trial preparation. Opportunites to appear in court are available to clerks whoqualify for the Certification Program.
We offer tours with federal agencies such as the United States Marshals Office, U.S Customs and Border Protection, and the Metropolitan Correction Center. With our office located close to the U.S.-Mexican border, we believe it is beneficial for our law clerks to witness the daily activities along this very active border. Brown bag lunches are also scheduled, with speakers from around the office covering diverse topics such as comparisons between public and private practice, border issues affecting the office, and taking depositions.
Descriptions of the types of matters handled in this office can be located by clicking on the links for the Criminal and Civil Divisions.
Interested students should submit a cover letter stating a preference for the Criminal or Civil Division, a resume, law school transcript, and writing sample to:
